This is where I experienced life at 3mph, it’s the average speed you travel down the river, the river being the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, USA. I was with five other families, we all knew each other, we where being guided by Boundary Expeditions the best rafting tour company I’d ever come across.
We spent 7 days traveling at 3mph everyday, except when you hit the rapids, sitting back and enjoying the Salmon River wilderness pass us by, we saw bears, deers and naturally salmon, which when the fishermen amongst us caught them, would practice the sustainability for this amazing wilderness of “catch and release”.
This shot was taken at one of the many spots we stopped and camped. I got up as usual at some silly hour in the dark and made my way along the river and then up this precarious slope to a spot I had scouted the previous afternoon. Traveling through the American wilderness was new to me and after seeing bears the day before, my senses where working overtime trying to spot any possible movements around me. Naturally I had bear spray but being dark meant that I could virtually bump into one without realizing it. But my best defense was noise, so humming the Sleeping Beauty classic “Off to work we go” seemed like the perfect choice.
The first morning light didn’t work for me that morning, but a little later just work fine, this was just one of the special moods The Middle Fork of The Salmon River bestowed on me.
