As I looked up through the fur tree’s, I could see that dawn was just starting to lighten the sky, but the forest around me was still cloaked in darkness. I swung my head torch from left to right try to decide which way to go, I knew where I wanted to be on the map, but getting there was challenging in the dark. I turned right and followed a completely overgrown track for 40 metres before turning left and bush bashing it down to the river.
I’d had this image in my head for over a year and had finally, I hope, found the spot on the Nisqually River that might enable me to capture it. Pushing my way out of the bush where the branches just seemed to want to claw at your body to keep its treasures hidden. I stepped onto the rocky river bed, frost had settled during the night making the rocks a little slippery, I turned left and made my way up river, the sky was starting to lighten even more, which spurred me on to get to the spot I’d picked on the map.
Ten minutes later I was there, Mt Rainier was starting to feel the effects of dawn and made a beautiful backdrop to the rocky Nisqually River. With a building sense of excitement, I quickly assembled my gear and got lost in the beautiful world of photography.
